Make Some Changes to Your Lifestyle to Reduce Your Heartburn
If you have heartburn, finding relief could be as easy as altering a few of your habits. Read on for a few ideas to stop heartburn in its tracks.
Many people get heartburn symptoms during the night. But just by cutting out your bedtime snack, you can get a lot of relief from your heartburn. Try to stop eating about two or three hours before turning in at night. Evening snackers will have a particularly difficult time with this. Yet it’s essential if you want to get a more restful sleep at night.
What you eat is just as important as when you eat it. For example, foods that are acidic like coffee, alcohol, citrus juices and tomato products all raise the chances of experiencing heartburn. Excess production of stomach acids can be caused by even seemingly harmless food items. High fat or spicy foods are often the culprit in a bad case of heartburn.
Restricting the quantity of food you consume is another consideration in staving off heartburn symptoms. This involves restricting your portion sizes at each meal. Food is sent back up the esophagus when your stomach is too full. And because it’s already soaked up some of your stomach acids, this contributes to that blazing discomfort in your chest.
If excess weight is a problem for you, considering losing some of the extra pounds. If they do so, a number of heartburn sufferers experience a reduction in their symptoms. Oftentimes they experience decreased pressure on the stomach, which leaves more room for the digestion process. Therefore it isn’t quite as likely that it will be returned up the esophagus.
Once in a while you may find yourself giving in to temptation and eating the wrong foods, or stuffing yourself past the point of comfort. When that happens, it’s critical that you stand or sit upright and avoid lying down. This will help to hold the food in your stomach, away from your esophagus, and hasten the digestion process.
It’s not just those who are overweight who need to make some lifestyle changes to avoid heartburn. Smokers are also at higher risk of experiencing this condition. If you smoke, the muscles in your esophagus don’t work as efficiently. So they have a harder time keeping undigested food out of the esophagus and in the stomach where it belongs. Also, the stomach acids of those who smoke is more toxic because of the chemicals present. Every time you take a puff on a cigarette, you raise your risk of suffering heartburn symptoms.
Be aware that a severe heartburn condition might not respond to simple lifestyle changes. Some will still require a visit to their physician before they get any relief.
